Your Questions, Answered

  • Honestly, try not to expect anything specific. Everyone’s experience is unique, and having set expectations can sometimes make it harder to notice the subtle (or even big!) changes that are happening.

Some people feel a shift after their very first session, while others notice changes after a few sessions. Sometimes, the people around you—like a spouse or family member—may notice changes before you do.

The key is to stay open and curious. Let go of expectations and allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised as you move through the process.

  • This really comes down to how you feel and what works best for your schedule. There’s no strict rule—your session frequency can be guided by your intuition and availability.

A helpful perspective from one of our founders, Susan Dermit Brown, Ph.D., is: “When you feel like you don’t have time for a session, that’s often when you need one the most.”

  • This is one of the most common questions—and the honest answer is, it varies.

Whether you’re dealing with migraines, ADHD, high blood pressure, or anything else, there isn’t a set number of sessions required. NeurOptimal® doesn’t change protocols based on symptoms or diagnoses. Instead, it’s all about your personal experience and awareness of change.

Each session is the same 33-minute training, whether you’re working with a provider or using a system at home. More isn’t always better—this isn’t about doing as many sessions as possible, but about consistent, supportive training over time.

  • Think of this process like learning a new skill—like reading or riding a bike. The more you practice, the more natural it becomes.

As your nervous system shifts toward greater comfort and flexibility, your body begins to recognize and return to those patterns more easily.

Over time, you may choose to do occasional “booster” sessions or continue regular sessions to maintain that sense of balance and resilience. It’s really about what feels right for you as you notice changes in your daily life.

  • Whatever feels comfortable!

Some people like to relax or even nap, while others read, play a game, or work on their computer. You can treat it as downtime or part of your regular routine.

The only real recommendation is to avoid too much movement—turning a page is fine, but activities like walking around or exercising aren’t ideal during a session.

  • Nope—there’s no age limit at all.

People use NeurOptimal® at every stage of life, from pregnancy and newborns to children, teens, adults, and seniors. Some even use it with their pets—dogs, cats, and horses!

Because it’s a training process, it’s gentle and adaptable for everyone, though each person’s experience and pace of change will be different.

  • Side effects typically come from things that actively force change in the body, like medication or certain types of stimulation.

NeurOptimal® doesn’t force or “push” your brain in any direction. Instead, it allows your brain to notice itself and make its own adjustments.

Occasionally, people may have a strong or noticeable experience—what Dr. Val Brown calls a “side journey.” This is simply your system processing change. Sometimes, old patterns (like stress or anxiety responses) can show up as your body adjusts—but nothing is being forced or imposed.
